Weld is an agent for a shadowy government organization that often employs lethal methods to take out evildoers. He doesn’t think twice about putting a slug between the eyes of drug dealers, arms merchants, or terrorists. Chesney is one of his recruits who’s not quite as stone cold when it comes to doling out justice with extreme prejudice. However, the six-foot vivacious blonde doesn’t hesitate to do whatever is necessary when her back’s against the wall. They’re both bad news for bad guys, but this time the level of bad is teetering on epic proportions.
Author Gallant has crafted a thriller that is as compelling intellectually as it is hormonally. While there’s plenty of gun play and sex talk to keep things spicy, it’s the fevered hunt for an unseen, unexplainable killer virus that keeps you turning page after page. The author’s considerable knowledge of technology helps meld computer science, biology, and medicine into a frighteningly plausible nightmare of a virus so deadly it could literally wipe out millions of people.
From the sweltering bayous of Louisiana, to the crowded freeways of Houston, to a dungeon-like Midwestern coalmine, Chesney and a brilliant but volatile virologist race against time to secure the microscopic killer before it becomes apocalyptic. Along the way they’re forced to deal with lecherous businessmen, brutal criminals, and perhaps even a ghost. Technical jargon that threatens to make one’s eyes glaze over is translated into understandable analogies adeptly. The pace of the novel is swift and sure, and the final conflict is as exciting as it satisfying. This thriller is true to its genre.
